Inspired by James Earle Fraser’s iconic End of the Trail, this painting reimagines one of the most recognizable images in American art as a study in permanence and memory. The figure is rendered as cast bronze — solid, monumental, enduring — set against a field of ancient Native petroglyphs drawn in earth and mud. Two languages of mark-making, centuries apart, sharing the same surface. The blue-green patina that covers the bronze is both a record of time and a layer of protection — the metal sealing itself against further corrosion, preserving the figure and the memory it carries. The petroglyphs behind him serve the same purpose, marks made by hand so that something would not be forgotten.
